Super display at Brigshaw!

Just to update you the girls football team played admirably in the football tournament at Brigshaw! They managed to get all the way to the final and ended up coming 2nd overall. This is an immense achievement and they should all feel very proud of themselves. The most important thing for me was that they played with smiles on their faces and are keen to continue playing for the school in future games!!!
I will continue training in the new year & start to look at putting a 7 a-side team together to play other local teams!

Girls football

I am delighted to announce that Methley now have a girl's football team & they have been attending weekly training sessions on a Wednesday afternoon. I have to say how impressed I am with their enthusiasm and dedication to training and look forward to arranging some friendly matches against other schools in the near future!

We are entering our first competition at Brigshaw on Monday 8th December. The competition is 5 a-side and indoors. Methley will be taking 9 players and will be hoping to finally put our training into practise against other schools!!

We wish them all the best for the competition!!

Outstanding team play in the Falkingham Cup!

Methley embarked on the 2nd round of the Falkingham Cup game at Woodlesford on a wet and windy Tuesday night!
Every player played out of their skins and not only did themselves proud but also their school.
Methley football team seem to get stronger in every game that they play and this match was no exception. There were many examples of powerful defending, super dribbling, accurate passing and superb strikes at goal. However the strong team ethic and great attitude was not enough to win the game and Methley ran out losing 2-1.
After the game Woodlesford's headteacher did admit that the best team had lost the game so the Methley players would have been justified to start feeling sorry for themselves. But they all went home with a spring in their step knowing that for large parts of the game they played the better football but luck just wasn't on their side.
The team will have a couple more training sessions before the end of the year & look forward to the Futsal competition at Brigshaw in January.

Exciting times ahead for the choir!!

Methley Primary School's Choir are pleased to announce an exciting adventure that they are embarking on Monday 8th of December. About 35 children are becoming performers at the Young Voices concert at Sheffield Arena. They will be joining a choir which will be about 5,000 strong and singing fantastic songs including a Disney medley, pop songs and a funky Rudolph number, not to mention the opera song which we have to sing in Italian!

We wish them all the best - They should all be very proud of themselves and Miss Fairfield, Miss Hulme and Mrs Foster will all be there to cheer them on!!

A super win in the cup!

I am pleased to report that our 15 strong squad that we sent to St Theresa's came away on Friday night victorious!!
The final score was St Theresa's 1 - Methley 3.

After a patient first half where both sides were weighing each other up there were few chances created and both teams must have felt confident that they could win the game in the 2nd half.
Methley started the 2nd half brightly and with a solid defence and Johnson & Hamnett running the show in the middle it was only a matter of time before our alert strikers would poach the 1st goal. As it happened the 1st goal came from some quick thinking from Hamnett as St Theresa's defensive clearance landed at his feet and after a couple of steps forward he successfully lobbed the keeper from about 25 yards! From this point our confidence started to grow and Plater went on a strong run inside their penalty box only to be tripped by the St Theresa's defence. The ref quickly pointed to the spot and Plater cooly tucked the spot kick into the bottom right hand corner - resulting in a 2 goal lead!
It was good to see the team continue to push forward and Methley got their rewards for their efforts when Pickering found himself in the box unmarked and was able to lash the ball home to make it 3-0!
There were a couple of near misses from both sides before St Theresa's brought themselves back into the game with a superb set piece. They swung in the corner and their striker headed into the far corner and nicely taken goal was finished with an equally extravagant celebration (one for the cameras!!) 3-1.
This resulted in a mini-revival from St Theresa's but thankfully for Methley, with a solide back 4 of Brown, Westmoreland, Gledhill and Thorpe we shut the door on any chances of conceding another! So the score remained at 3-1.

A big well done to all the players - We now await a mouth watering clash with Woodlesford in the next round!!

A big thanks to all the parents who offered their support (especially Mr Plater who ran the line) and those who were able to give lifts to other children!

Falkingham Cup

The fixture for the 1st round of the Flakingham Cup has been confirmed and will take place on 14th November at St Theresa's Primary School kick off 3pm.

For a map of where St Theresa's is please copy and paste this link into a new browser http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=LS15+8RQ&countryCode=GB.

The game is 11 a-side and the squad has been chosen and letters have been sent to parents. Please return them back to me asap so I know who is available to play!! As the school cannot provide transport we are relying on the help of parent's to get children to and from St Theresa's. We fully appreciate the dedication of our parent's in helping out with transport and if it wasn't for you then the children would not gain from the benefits of playing other schools in cup competitions.
If you can provide transport for your child and have room for others then please write it down on the reply slip and let me know!

Thanks again for your continued support for the school football team and I hope to see you at the game next week!!

Amazing athletics results!!

Methley put forward an athletics team for the Boston Spa championships on Thursday 6th November. The competition was held at Brigshaw High School and consisted of many different events including obstacle relays, hurdles, long jumps and javelin throwing.

It gives me great pleasure to report that every child gave 100% in their particular event and they all showed great team spirit. When the children were watching other team members racing they were also encouraging and congratulating them before, during and after every event!
Teachers (Mrs Reynard, Mrs Ashby & Miss Medd) and the parents that came to watch were just as vocal during events and I'm sure this helped to boost the children's performance!

As a result of a few weeks hard training and great performances on the day I'm proud to say that Methley ran away as clear winners of the overall championships!! They won by a clear margin of over 30 points against some other hard working and determined schools.

They have now progressed to compete in a cup competition at John Smeaton school and the event will be held on Friday November 14th at 3.30pm.

Here is a list of all the children that competed:-
Boys - Jim Lloyd, Harrison Scott, James Johnson, Jake McCaffrey, Lewis Pickering, Bradley Kaye, George Hamnett, Charlie Dobson, Ryan Gledhill, Luke Parkin, Sam Garman.

Girls - Kodi Gledhill, Olivia Scott, Georgia Scollan, Hannah Goury, Abbie Dadson, Ella Wilkinson, Francesca Fox, Natasha Brown, Bethan Parkin, Georgia Stanley.

A big congratulations to those that competed and to all members of the athletics club!!

Leeds City Players

I'm pleased to say that we have a very talented football team this year and two individuals are setting the standards! George Hamnett and Natasha Brown were put forward for the Leeds City Trials last year. They were amongst many other school children from Leeds hoping to get into the prestigious Leeds City team.
They were both successful and can now proudly say that they are amongst the best under 11/12 football players in Leeds. It is an outstanding achievement and we wish them all the best for this season!!
If you want to keep up to date with how they get on this season or any other information regarding Leeds City teams please follow this link...

Football news

Mr Mohammed and I are really excited about this football season as the attitude from all the players has been superb right from the 1st training session in September. I think this has been reflected in the effort that they have put into the friendly games that we have played so far this year!

Just to update you on our results so far this season:-

9/10/08 - Home to Woodlesford - 1st game Lost 3-1, 2nd game lost 0-1.
Both games were played in good spirits and I think we shocked Woodlesford with some outstanding team work. Callum Maundrill deservedly picked up player of the match for the 1st game with some superb 'cat like' saves!! Whilst Kyle Campy showed great resolve and perseverance to keep the defence solid in the 2nd game.

17/10/08 - Home to St Theresa's - 1st game drew 0-0, 2nd game won 1-0.
It seems that we are getting stronger after every game that we play! Natasha Brown earned player of the match for the 1st game and was like the Thames Barrier (nothing was going to leak through) in defence - She is now starting to play with confidence whilst the ball is at her feet (Showing why she has been selected to play for Leeds City Girls). In the 2nd game we managed our first victory of the season via a neatly deflected shot (from Joshua Clements' knee!!), but they all count and it was no more than Methley deserved. Two fine games and I'm sure the next game will be a cracker!!

We are due to play St Theresas' again before November 21st - This is the re-arranged 11 a-side Falkingham cup game which was originally scheduled for 17th Oct. The cup was redrawn after we had arranged the fixture and changed to an away game (a little fustrating but at least it meant that we didn't have to change our pitch size to 11 a-side for 1 game!!)

I am currently awaiting St Theresa's response to confirm when we can come to theirs to play the game. WATCH THIS SPACE!!

Thanks Mr M

Outstanding netball news!!!

Only a couple of weeks ago we were informed that there was a netball championship occuring at Brigshaw High School. We were equally excited and scared at the prospect. We were excited as history has shown in recent years that we have a good record in netball events and nervous because the netball training hadn't started this year and we had only 7 days to find a team to play in the tournament!!!

Mrs Reynard & Mrs Ashby rallied hard over the 7 days and managed to assemble a team of 8 players. After a few stressful lunchtime training sessions Methley had a group of players which would, at least, proudly represent the school at Brigshaw!

The players that were chosen were - Joseph Plater, Joseph Brain, Joshua Clements, Chloe Campbell, Kodi Gledhill, Hannah Smith, Natasha Brown and Caitlin Bastow.

So off went the 8 players and a hopeful Mrs Reynard & Mrs Ashby to Brigshaw on the 20th October to play in the 'High 5' Tournament!

Much to the delight (and possibly surprise) of the teachers and parents who attended the tournament Methley started solidly and winning started to become a bit of a habit!! I wasn't at the tournament but the smile on Mrs Reynard's face said it all on Tuesday morning when she said to me that not only did they play superbly, they also won all 3 of their games and didn't concede a single goal!!!

This made them Boston Spa Area Champions and means that their dream will continue in the next round when we play other schools that have run their area finals!

I think the team deserves a big well done and they should be very proud of their achievements!!

We are all now looking forward to the next round of the competition. Watch this space for more information!!
